I’ve started planning my trip to Europe next year and went through some pictures I took on my last trip. One place I visited that I would like to return to is Nice, in the South of France.
We got to Nice via an overnight train from Venice. We had a sleeper cabin, but had to share it with another couple. I really like the idea of traveling overnight on trains, but I’m often left tired from a lack of sleep and this was no exception.
We arrived in Nice, quickly checked into our hotel and hit the beach. The colour of the Mediterranean water needs to be seen to be believed, a beautiful aqua that glows it’s so blue.
It was not much of a sunbathing beach by Australian standards though, the foreshore was made of large round pebbles that were not very comfortable to lie on.. though this didn’t seem to perturb anyone.
We stayed at the Hotel Le Negresco, which was both interesting and comfortable. Nice really lights up after dark, and there are some great places to eat. We tried a variety of dishes over our two nights, but what I remember most was the Creme Brûlée we had for desert one night.
I got up early one morning and watched the sunrise from the beach. Afterwards I walked down towards the south corner of the beach. Even at this hour the boardwalk was pretty busy, with walkers, joggers and even stragglers from the night before.
A highlight of Nice is the walk up Castle Hill, which is a bit of an effort, but provides a great view of Nice.
