Melbourne’s Southbank; Close to Everything

I recently traveled to Melbourne for a work trip, arriving on the weekend so I could have a day and night to explore the city.
When in Melbourne I always try to stay at the Crowne Plaza as it has a great view down the Yarra River it’s fairly centrally located and you can usually get a good deal on one of the hotel booking sites.

Southbank at Night

As this was a work trip, I had to lower my sights a little, and ended up in a cheap but comfortable room at the Travel Lodge in Southbank, very close to the picture above.

Flinders Street Station

I didn’t get up to much, it was cold and I didn’t have the motivation or need to travel far from where I was staying. None the less I was able to capture some interesting pictures all within a few hundred meters of where I was staying.

Melbourne city has a number of interesting places to visit and take photographs. Melbourne trams are iconic as well as the front of Flinders Street Station, famous for its iconic clocks and distinctive

Southbank Art

Southbank is a restaurant, bar and shopping precinct along the Yarra river. Melbourne has gone a bit artsy over the last decade, and this shows up here and there as you walk along the streets.

Melbourne Busker

The busker scene is also vibrant, particularly around Southbank and Bourke Street Mall. This shot was taken in the underpass to Flinders Street Station.

Melbourne Arts Centre

The Arts Centre at night is a site to behold at night. If you want to try something more exotic than a tram, you can rent a horse drawn carriage anywhere along Swanston Street.

Another interesting place central to the city is Flinders Lane, which has been given totally over to graffiti artists, who have free reign to decorate the walls how they see fit.

Federation Square

Federation Square, overlooking the majestic St Pauls Cathedral, is now the central activity area in the city, with many live events held there. It is also a major meeting point, replacing the Flinders st Station steps, which can attract some shady characters.

Southbank Night

So I didn’t need to travel far to see some great sites, proving Southbank is a good central locations for a stay in Melbourne.

There are some great restaurants in the area, and nice walks along the river. The casino is nearby also, as well as some great shopping including a DFO with a wide range of bargain clothes.
